Chapter 10

BLAIR AND HER MOTHER stopped at the park to sit on a bench and watch some kids skateboarding. It was late when they finally walked up the stairs to their house.

“Thanks a lot for going out tonight, Mom. I had a really good time.” Her teenage self would never have believed that she would enjoy just walking down the street, eating at the diner, and sitting at the park with her mother of all people. The words were true now. She definitely had a different view of and a higher respect for her mom. Her teenage self was stupid. She had a lot of years to make up for.

Her mother had tried to gently probe about Deacon, but Blair had been pretty tight-lipped. She was enjoying her newfound relationship with her mother, but she wasn’t sure what was going on with Deacon, and she didn’t want to talk about it.

Her mother took her elbow, and she helped her up the four wide steps to get on the front porch. She should have turned the porch light on, but she had never imagined that they would be out until after dark.

“If you’ve got a minute, I’d like to talk to you.” Deacon’s voice came out of the darkness, startling her.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t see you.” She sounded breathless, because she was. He did that to her. There weren’t too many times in her life when a person had come to her defense like Deacon had tonight. Certainly none since she’d gone to prison. His stamp of approval on her meant something.

It also meant something that he was risking his position to have her in the church. If enough people got together, they could both be out. Of course, Deacon wasn’t losing any money, but he’d be losing the job he loved.

She supposed Deacon would say God was in control and they should just keep working and not worry about it. Just keep doing right. At one time, she might have rolled her eyes at that. But now, she almost couldn’t believe that Deacon was right. Maybe she needed just a little more faith.

“So can you talk?” Deacon prompted.

“I need to go in and help Mom get to bed.”

“I can go and get myself to bed. I’ve been doing it for years now. You stay here and talk to Deacon.”

“Mom. I came here for you. I’m going to help you get to bed. If Deacon wants to talk to me, he can wait.” Her words sounded a little harsh maybe. But he had been out on a date with another woman earlier in the evening. Two women in one night was a little much for any man, but especially for Deacon. She should turn him down flat.

“I’ll wait. Unless you want help.”

“No. I can get it.”

“Then if it’s okay, I’ll sit on the swing and wait on you to come out.”

“You do that, son,” her mother said, grabbing Blair’s arm.
